Our Story

(Revised May 18, 2025)

The Igbo Women League of Minnesota (IWL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn Center, MN, founded in 1994 by a group of visionary Igbo women. With a membership of over 60 professional women from diverse backgrounds, IWL is dedicated to unifying, educating, and advancing the socio-cultural and economic development of women of African descent and their families. Membership is open to women who are Igbo by birth or marriage, fostering a vibrant and intellectually rich community.
Initially established as a cultural organization, IWL has evolved to address the broader needs of the community, both in Minnesota and in Nigeria. The organization became a fully recognized tax-exempt nonprofit in 2007, enabling it to expand its charitable initiatives and offer tax-deductible donations to supporters.

IWL’s major programs include:
  • An educational scholarship program for underprivileged girls in Nigeria, launched in 2005, which has supported over 90 students through secondary, tertiary, and vocational education.
  • A Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program (YMLP) for children of African descent in Minnesota, started in 2008, focusing on cultural education, language preservation, and youth empowerment.
  • Ongoing support for Motherless Babies Homes in Nigeria, with relief extended to 18 homes and active support for nine.
  • Community health initiatives, such as partnering with the Minnesota Department of Health to provide COVID-19 education and vaccination events for underserved populations.

Throughout its history, IWL has remained committed to its cultural roots while expanding its reach to serve as a pillar of support, unity, and progress for the Igbo and broader African community in Minnesota and beyond. The organization funds its projects through donations, grants, sponsorships, and community fundraising, maintaining a strong reputation for financial responsibility and community impact.

Visitors are encouraged to explore IWL’s website and support its mission through generous donations.
